Hey there. Homeschooling is permitted in Alberta, but you must comply with several requirements before starting to homeschool. Families just have 2 choices to homeschool in Alberta which are pretty easy to meet as homeschooling is permitted by law in Alberta.

• Home education program supervised by school authority (funded)

• Home education program not supervised by school authority (notification only, non-funded)

In order to conduct a home study program in Alberta, families must must choose between 2 simple choices. Parents who choose to homeschool in Alberta have the primary responsibility for planning, providing, managing, evaluating and supervising their students' courses of study. The 2 options are:

• Supervised by school authority (funded): a home education program supervised by a willing public, separate or francophone school board or accredited funded private school. Eligible for funding from Alberta Education.

• Not supervised by school authority (notification only, non-funded): a home education program not supervised by a school board or accredited funded private school. Not eligible for funding from Alberta Education.

You are required to observe some requirements before you begin to homeschool in Alberta. Homeschooling in Alberta is legal and there are two basic homeschooling options to homeschool your students in Alberta. A parent or person homeschooling a child in Alberta is not mandatory by law to be licensed as a teacher in Alberta. However, using curriculum developed by certified or licensed teachers even if not from Alberta is recommended. There are certain requirements which need to be followed to homeschool in Alberta. Families are allowed to homeschool in Alberta. The requirements to homeschool in Alberta are not very complex to comply with. There are no rules for the quantity of work to be assigned or how often it needs to be done, the tracking method to be used to evaluate the homeschooled child’s progress or the academic materials to be used. To prevent truancy uncertainty, students already enrolled in public/private school should be withdrawn officially before starting the homeschool program.
