Course Description:

Algebra 1 is the stepping stone to higher level mathematics. The tools that the student learns to use in this course are used in Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and higher level mathematics. Students often wonder how they will apply what they learn in Algebra 1. Mathematics is more than adding and subtracting or solving word problems. Mathematics develops the critical thinking skills that the mind requires to solve a multitude of life problems in and outside of the classroom. The course teaches the student how to solve and graph linear functions. Slope intercept, point slope, and standard forms of linear equations are investigated, along with how to write equations for a line in each form. Lessons also include finding equations of parallel and perpendicular lines that go through specific points to another line.

Course Goals:

The succesful student will be able to graph linear equations by using the slope intercept form, find equations of lines when given a point and the slope or two points, be able to convert between slope intercept, point slope, and standard forms of linear equations, and be able to find equaitons of parallel and perpendicular lines through specific points.

Target Audience:

The target audience is 8th and 9th grade students who have experience in solving one, two, and multi-step equations and know how to do the distributive property.

Course Requirements:

The student will complete ten course lessons with the activities and quizzes that are given for each lesson. The student will be able to succesfully pass the quiz activity of lesson ten to demonstrate successful retention of the knowledge in this course.

I have taught mathematics for over ten years. I received my Bachelor Degree from the University of Missouri – St. Louis. I have experience teaching 6th, 7th and 8th grade mathematics, Algebra 1, and Pre-calculus. I grew up in a small town in Illinois, and entered the navy after high school. I received technical training in the military and afterwards worked for various companies dealing with power generation, industrial control, and nuclear medicine in the St. Louis area. I always wanted to teach and after marrying my wife, we decided to pursue my teaching career in Texas. We returned home after five years of teaching in Dallas. I am now working with the students and parents in the area where I grew up.
