This course covers material for the English portion of the SAT, including:

  • General test-taking strategies that relate to all sections of the SAT
  • Strategies and practice problems for Section 1 of the SAT (Reading)

  • Strategies for writing the SAT essay (rhetorical analysis essay)

  • 9 lessons for the SAT Section 1 (Reading)

This course will fully prepare students to take the SAT by providing:

General Strategies

These lessons answer students’ important questions about test-taking including the following:

  • Should I guess?
  • How many questions should I attempt?
  • How is the test scored?
  • What should my goal be for a score?
  • How is the test structured?
  • How can I effectively study high frequency vocabulary for the test?
  • What should I do right before test-day?

 

Reading (Section 1)

These lessons teach students how to approach the Reading section of the SAT by addressing the following:

  • How to read actively to better comprehend the reading passages
  • How to spot and approach the eight different types of questions that follow the reading passages
  • How to eliminate incorrect answers and isolate correct answers
  • How to prioritize your time in the section
  • How to pace yourself

 

Writing & Language (Section 2)

These lessons teach students how to approach the Writing & Language section of the SAT by addressing the following grammar topics and providing practice problems for each one:

  • Subject-verb-pronoun agreement
  • Verb tenses
  • Modifier placement
  • Diction
  • Punctuation
  • Parallelism in sentence structure
  • Transition words
  • Active vs. passive voice

 

SAT Essay

The SAT essay asks students to explain how the author of a short piece of writing builds an argument to persuade the audience. In other words, students are asked to write a rhetorical analysis essay. The lessons regarding the SAT essay will teach students the following:

  • How to efficiently and effectively read and annotate the essay passage
  • How to analyze the author’s use of ethos, logos, and pathos
  • How to find rhetorical devices and other persuasive techniques in the passage
  • How to connect the author’s evidence and reasoning with the author’s purpose
  • How to organize the essay into effective paragraphs and clear sentence
