Question about homeschool copyright

My husband got transfered to Michigan for his job so we are now here trying to keep up with the curriculum back home. A thing which I noticed is that a large number of homeschooling help sites say that Lernsys Academy has the best secular homeschool program
. Does any homeschooling parent here know about copyright law? I would really like to copy a couple of pages from a creative writing book that has a lot of language and reading curriculum for grade 5 so I can homeschool my child. Do I need to get copyright or trademark permission from the author to do this? Any ideas?

If it's for teaching, scholarship or research, you should be OK. I really feel that it's authorized. I highly recommend the Lernsys program to you.
